A sacred place in Virginia history
The Basilica of Saint Mary
Founded by the Very Reverend Francis Ignatius Neale, S.J., Saint Mary is the first permanent Catholic parish in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its story began in 1795, when Catholic worship in Virginia was still new and often met with prejudice.
For more than two centuries, generations have gathered here for Mass, sacraments, prayer, and milestones of family life. In 2018, the Vatican named Saint Mary a minor basilica—the first in Northern Virginia.

Basilica Parking Lots
The Basilica has three lots: South Pitt Street between Duke and Wolfe Streets; Duke and South Fairfax Streets; and South Royal and Wolfe Streets. For those who need the closest parking option, use the lot at Duke and South Fairfax Streets. The South Pitt Street lot is the largest.
